TPG Post

We have designed several stamps for PTT Post International (now TPG Post). Traditionally the Dutch PTT commissions designers from The Netherlands as well as other countries to design the stamps. It's an honor to be asked for the design of a stamp - it is a piece of complex design and intricate printing.
The stamps were printed at Joh. Ensched, the security printing company in Haarlem.

Suske and Wiske

In 1997 we were commissioned to design two stamps about Suske and Wiske, two cartoon characters famous in the Benelux countries. The illustrations were selected from hundreds of books. The brief asked for two stamps which would show the long and rich history of the characters, as well as some sort of picture the current figures. The typography and the images were selected from many different stories. Our work, apart from dealing with technical and print related issues, was to find the right material. More like editing than design.

Christmas Stamps

Every year the PTT offers a special rate for the season's greetings. Special stamps are for sale with the reduced rate, 55 cents in 1999. On the flip side of the 1998 stamps the PTT solicited designs, ideas, drawings or photographs from the 'general public'. In february 1999 a jury selected 20 designs from over 6000 entries. Then we were asked for a design that would bring all entries together and make stamps out of them. The material was very diverse: children's drawings, photographed pets, from professional illustrators and designers to inspired hobbyists.

In July 1999 we presented the sheet of 20 stamps to the winners and press. Printing started in August, a run of 200 million stamps. Typeface is HTF Leviathan, the numbers are from HTF Knockout, both from the The Hoefler & Frere-Jones Type Foundry.

An added bonus was the design of a stamp for 25 cents, the amount needed to make leftover christmas stamps suitable for regular mail, 80 cents. After several different designs, this entirely typographic solution was chosen.

Parcel stamps

Based on the design of one of the 1999 christmas stamps, the parcel postage is a 4 sheet self copying form. A special rate for parcels in the holiday season, and also a special design. Two variations for parcels to EU countries, and the rest.

The stamps are shown at a reduced scale. All stamps are copyrighted by PTT Post International.
